There is a long-standing connection between Joe Freshgoods and New Balance. The Chicago-based creative is starting a unique partnership with the Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 990v4 “1998” Pack as the year ends. Taking a relatively modest approach, this collection differs from his past bright shoe offerings.
With his storytelling skills, Freshgoods has always distinguished himself from other New Balance partners. In September, he debuted a limited edition New Balance 650 that quickly sold out of its 500 pairs globally, imagining a world in which Michael Jordan had never signed a contract with Nike.
Belly, a 1998 crime movie, inspires Freshgoods’ first interpretation of the New Balance 990v4. The film, which Hype Williams directed, features R&B singer T-Boz, Method Man, Taral Hicks, and well-known rappers Nas and DMX. A devoted cult following has developed for the film since its original lackluster reviews, and 25 years later, it has sparked a shoe collection.
The ‘Intro’ colorway, which has white pigskin suede panels layered on a black ballistic mesh foundation, is inspired by the noir-style look of the movie. On the other hand, the ‘Outro’ reverses this color scheme and uses a black-and-white layout. Large “N” emblems on the sides, glossy leather accents, and Encap tech-infused midsoles for increased comfort are features shared by both pairs. On the side heel, the letters “JFG” are engraved, while the year “1998” appears discreetly on the back to mark Belly’s debut.
Inspired by the movie’s renowned nightclub heist scene, the’ Keisha Blue’ hue completes the bundle. These shoes, priced at $250 each, will go on sale on December 22 at Joe Freshgoods’ website, New Balance, and other international retailers. Considering Freshgoods’ past performance, the line is expected to sell out quickly.
